Not too shabby, here's what he used :

Not sure what's in the jar, some kind of putty I can only assume. His stippling tool appears to be homemade. He's got to have more patience than I do!

Tamiya putty can be used too. I've had a couple of tries on a scrap kit. Haven't quite perfected my technique well enough to try 'in earnest' but I can see how it works. I'll refer you back to that Sherman pic you posted with the texture altered on the lower hull for the sake of comparison.
You can dilute Tamiya putty with liquid cement...almost thinning like paint. I've used it to apply texture to the exhaust system of my current Panzer IV that I'm getting tiny sessions on lately...maybe an hour here and there, so no pics yet.

I've been meaning to pick up and try putty. So far, I just use glue to fill in nasty sink marks...which is a pain!
