Hitler Youth Jew Is Honoured

An 81-year-old Jewish man who hid his true identity during the Holocaust by enlisting in the Hitler Youth was this week honoured at the German car factory where he saw out the war.

After fleeing to Russia from Lodz following the invasion of Poland, Solomon Perel was eventually captured by the Nazis in 1941.

But concealing his heritage, the teenager was able to join the youth movement and secure employement as an apprentice at a Volkswagen plant which made military vehicles for the Third Reich.

On Monday, a plaque was unveiled at the VW factory commemorating Perel’s bravery.

He said: “In the daytime, I acted like an enthusiastic member of the Hitler youth, but at night I was thinking of my parents. I used to come into this building every day, scared of being caught.”
