For the sheer, warlike fun of it:

Kelly's Heroes

For the "they don't make 'em like that anymore" factor:

The Longest Day or To Hell and Back

For the action:

Saving Private Ryan

For the acting:

Downfall

Honestly I don't know. I love my WW2 films. I'd say Downfall was superb the Germans sure do make good war films. On that note Stalingrad was great too. SPR was good in the action elements. Conspiracy was good on a Downfall type note where it was more of a dry non-action packed film but an interesting insight on the whole planning of the Final Solution ordeal. Kelly's Heroes was funny on the comical note. I guess I cannot pick just one film.

"Kelly's Heroes". Never heard of it. But it seems to be a good movie, when anybody keeps mentioning it.

Re: What's your favorite World War II movie?

A lot of good movies have already been mentioned here. However, I'd like to throw in some additional ones that I like. The first is the Pianist, starring Adrien Brody. Very good story here, including the showing of the Jewish Ghetto uprising in Warsaw. The second movie - more of a popcorn flick, but good nonetheless - is Swing Kids. What's interesting about this movie is way entertainment was affected in the Nazis; this is something we don't normally get to see in WWII movies.

Rats! I missed out "The pianist".
I don't know if it is avaliable in the UK or the US: "NAPOLA - Elite for the Führer" Was quite a good german movie. It's about an Eliteschool for future Gauleiter.

The Pianist was very good. I never saw Swing Kids. I'll have to check that out, thanks.

"Swing Kids"? Doesn't ring a bell. Director? Actors?

Re: What's your favorite World War II movie?

You might not enjoy Swing Kids for its historical accuracy. That's why I put it more in line with a "popcorn" movie. Stars a young Christian Bale, as well as Noah Wylie.

See here:

Swing Kids (1993)
