He wasn't exactly in peak physical condition at the time! After the 20th July explosion he had aged quite considerably, and I didn't think that Ganz looked particularly fat. Personally I think Bruno Ganz's portrayal was spot on.

I think Patton is the classic, A Bridge too Far is the most ambitious and sweeping, The Bridge at Remagen my favorite for combat and action and Schindler's List the most poignant.

I would have to go with "Twelve O'Clock High" with Gregory Peck and Dean Jagger. A very good drama (with some humorous moments-especially when Savage chews out Harvey Stovall for stowing away on a Fort for a mission over Germany) that's mature and realistic-a classic.
