Thin Red Line

Anyone seen this movie? Came out in 1998, about Guadalcanal. It didn't get all that much publicity hype since it was around the same time that Saving Private Ryan was released, but I believe that the critics gave it some good reviews.

I saw it, and I'm not really sure what to think. I didn't find it as great as I thought it would be. Nick Nolte's character was memorable, and Jim Caviezal's character was rather spacy.

What are your thoughts on the movie?

Re: Thin Red Line

I've seen it. I was very disapointed when it was released.

If I am not completly mistaken, it even was nominated for an Oscar (as if that still would say something about a movie).

Re: Thin Red Line

I was very disappointed as well. I have the book and expected much more.

The fact that "Thin Red Line" was released rougly in the same time as SPR is important. SPR and Spielberg had official Pentagon blessing.
Thin Red Line had not blessing at all, due to "gold teeth collection" scene.

IMHO Nick Noltes character was flabbergasting. From my experience in the army, types like portraied by Nolte have to be very careful because accidents can happen at any time.
I know that in the US ARMY such accident were called "fragging". From "fragmentation grenade" usually rolled into offensive officer individual trench or tent.

Re: Thin Red Line

I really liked the movie, though I have to admit that it had so much more potential...

Re: Thin Red Line

@temujin77: You are perfectly right about that. I expected much more when I first saw the movie. Perhaps my high expectations are to blame for my disapointment.

@Phidippides: Who is your new Avatar? Not a marathon runner I presume?

OMG you don't recognize the person in the avatar??? He's my hero!

The pipe and the stars on the collar should give you enough hints to venture a guess

That's Douglas "I shall return" MacArthur. His Memorial is right here in Norfolk, Virginia. That's him landing on Luzon (upon his return in 1945) in the logo above, at the right.

Re: Thin Red Line

For me it's hard to smoke a corn cob pipe without thinking of MacArthur. The avatar photo is one of the most enduring images of a U.S. general, IMO.
