Re: Winter War

My grandfather was a veteran of that war. My father migrated to Australia from Finland in 1961. I've been lucky enough to visit some of the less well-known sites in Finland and have stood on the rear deck of a T-34/76 captured in The Continuation War.
Another member of this forum sent me a copy of Talvesotta last Christmas because it's totally unknown in Australia. It's an awesome movie that I've only watched once so far. Here's my grandfather's 'war trophies'.

Re: Winter War

Talvisota is a great movie n' I remember that I thought it was rather long to see at the theater back in the day's when it was premiered here in Sweden but I saw it any way at the theater, thankfully there was a 10 minute intermission in the middle of it so you could stretch the legs n' move about a little. Anyway a great movie n' there's other great movies out there that deals with both the the Winter war n' the Continuation war.

Re: Winter War

I'm not sure if they're officer's insignia but I suspect not. I think they're from a soft cap. They're both beautifully enamelled and the hammer/sickle devices are brass. They have a weight that later Soviet stuff lacked. There are also three little triangle devices...one is missing, that went on epaulettes we think.
Somewhere here I also have a 'Lotta Svärd' (women's auxilliary) badge too that belonged to my grandmother. I had my grandfather's bayonet also but I gave it to a friend who collects such things.

Re: Winter War

There's an interesting documentary type film called "Fire and Ice." It's good if you don't know much about the conflict.
