Just watched a documentary called "Nanking" with Woody Harrelson and others acting the parts of Americans and Europeans that stayed in the city to try and help the Chinese. Was interesting that a German diplomat helped to shield civilians by placing a large Nazi flag on top of a makeshift bunker (Japan was allied with Germany at the time).

Saw it a few weeks ago. It's one thing to read about it, quite another to view it. Horrifying would be an understatement. And here, almost 3/4 of a century later, we have the Japanese government still refusing to accept responsibility.
