Re: Field Marshall Erwin Rommel
I believe Rommel took on the original, large mantle of heading Hitler's security troops early in the war, at which he often accompanied Hitler very closely in routine day-to-day stuff like dinners, etc. It is fair to say he had Hitler's ear, and developing admiration...which I suspect set him up nicely when Germany started to adopt new ways of doing things after WWI, such as the use of Armor. Rommel was connected strongly to Cavalry, yes, but his main role initially was Infantry...of which his book "Infantry Attacks" on the later subject was "the" book at the time. But, he wanted to lead armor, and his posting with Hitler I think served him well toward that end...but I wonder just how "connected" he was to him. I get the nagging impression he used Hitler as a means to an end, but I don't think he was his lap dog, either.
