Just a quick mention here of my uncle. He was 19 years old when he died of wounds in Italy serving with the Irish Regiment of Canada. I have a website dedicated to him and his comrades who made the supreme sacrifice during WWII.

I have copied the information from my site to this post. All the fatalities have the same basic bio I have included here.

Date of Birth: 12 August 1925 (claimed on Attestation papers as born 1923)
Place of Birth: Bancroft Ontario
Age: 19 years
Height: 5’ 7”
Weight: 130 lbs
Complexion: Medium
Eyes: Hazel
Hair: Dark Brown
Religion: Pentecostal
Marital Status: Single
Family:
Father; Herman Sanford (died 1942)
Mother; Edith
Brothers; William, Richard, Harvey, Archie, Gordon, Murney, and Arnold
Sisters; Grace (Manders)
Other family facts: Brother Richard Cpl. serving in Debert, Nova Scotia, Harvey and
Archie both Ptes serving Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment in Italy. Mother
remarried (Jopp) 5 July 1943 in Peterborough, Ontario. He plans to wed Miss. Eva Dugan
of Cardinal Ontario, after service.
Education: Part of grade 8, left school to work
Trade or Calling: Farm hand 1937-42
Date of Enlistment: 16 March 1943
Place of Enlistment: Kingston Ontario
Regiment or Unit: No. 3A District Depot general list
Reason for Enlistment: to get away from work
Date Taken on Strength to Irish Regiment of Canada: 06 June 1944 in Italy
Theaters and Dates of Service: Canada 16-Mar-43 to 24-Nov-43
U.K. 25-Nov-43 to 19-Feb-44
Italy 20-Feb-44 to 14-Sep-44
Notes from interviewer: Stability appears fair, although he admits that he didn’t get
along well at home. Is quiet, personality is underdeveloped, and he talks in a low quiet
voice. Learning ability is slightly lower than Army Average but should be trainable.
Interests include animals and weapons. Sports hunting and riding, and a little softball.
Reads western and Detective magazines (confined). No hobbies. Appears rather nervous
and somewhat immature. His manner is alert and he talks in a low voice with nervous
movements of the hands.
Date of Death: 14 September 1944
Circumstances: DOW, received a gun shot wound penetrating the abdomen on 13
September 1944, during the Regiments attack on the town of Coriano. He was
transported from 24ADS to 4 Cdn CCS at 2230 hrs. The Pre-op report states- patient’s
condition has deteriorated, thus has no hope to stand surgery. He died at 0720 hrs. 14
September 1944.
